Timothy Sapwell, lead by Phil Bradley KC, recently secured convictions against a man responsible for the targeted rape of a British Indian Sikh woman. On 24th April, John Ashby received a sentence of life imprisonment, with concurrent sentences for robbery, racially aggravated assault, and intentional strangulation of the same victim.

Mr Justice Pepperall described Ashby as “a deeply unpleasant racist and Islamophobe.” In a case that has received widespread media attention, Ashby had targeted his victim and followed her from a bus stop, wrongly assuming that she was a Muslim, and shouting anti-Islamic abuse during the prolonged attack.
