Background

Julian Lynch completed his Pupillage at 13 Kings’ Bench Walk before moving to Cornwall Street Chambers. He studied history at Corpus Christi College, Oxford before retraining for the Bar. His employment background before coming to the law involved stints as a civil servant and working for the University of Oxford’s social sciences department.

Julian Lynch has a busy criminal practice in the Crown Courts, primarily in the South Eastern and Midlands circuits. He has appeared in cases of all levels of seriousness, up to and including murder, complex multi-handed conspiracies and serious sexual offending. He also has experience appearing before the Court of Appeal (criminal division). He has experience of working for the Probation Service and in prosecuting on behalf of local councils. He completed a one-year secondment at the Crown Prosecution Service between October 2020 and October 2021, serving as a Senior Crown Prosecutor, and accordingly has a detailed knowledge of CPS practice and procedures.

Julian has successfully represented clients in taxi licensing appeals and has some experience of Courts Martial and private prosecutions. He has been described as ‘very calm and sensible’ by clients. He has particular experience in:

  • Cases of serious violence
  • Cases involving allegations of domestic violence, both prosecuting and defending
  • Road traffic offences
  • Sexual Harm Prevention Orders
  • Drugs offences, including supply of Class A drugs
  • Dangerous dogs

Julian has some experience of Public Law family work, can has experience of dealing with cases involving an intersection of a criminal and family law.

Julian is available to be instructed on a Public Access basis in suitable cases.

Julian is a member of the Criminal Bar Association (CBA) and South-Eastern Circuit.”

Family Law

Julian also has a public law Family Court practice, focusing on care proceedings. He has been instructed by the police in hearings before the Family Court dealing with: disclosure of papers for linked criminal proceedings; Forced Marriage Protection Orders; and other criminally-linked matters. 

Regulatory Law

Julian also has experience of regulatory proceedings before the Teachers’ Regulation Agency, and has a special interest in criminal proceedings against teachers acting in their professional capacity

Notable Cases
  • R v G [2022] – defence in a case of alleged attempted murder of a nurse by a client detained in Broadmoor hospital. 
  • R v O [2022] – defending client accused of procuring the abortion of her own foetus. 
  • R v Green and others [2022] – prosecution junior counsel in ten-handed conspiracy to steal vans and van parts. Case consisted of over thirty individual offences taking place over several years in many different parts of the country.  
  • R v S [2022] – defence of a 16 year-old accused of participating in the detention, rape and torture of a young woman. 
  • TRA v J [2022] – representing a headteacher accused of historic sex offences against pupils before a disciplinary panel.  
  • R v R [2021] – defence of a client accused of stabbing an acquaintance during a drug deal gone wrong. 
  • R v S [2020] – defence of a headteacher accused of assaulting a pupil and tearing his clothing.

  • R v Ka [2019] – Defending client accused of murder as part of a gang attack on a rival drug dealer. Client acquitted of murder.

Interests

Julian maintains his interest in history and reads widely around the subject. He takes part in historical reenactment in his spare time, as well as enjoying travelling widely.
